Effects of return periods on flood hazard mapping: an analysis of the UFSC Campus Basin, Florianópolis city, Brazil

ABSTRACT The development of urban areas exacerbates flood risk by increasing both runoff and the exposure population infrastructure. In this study, we highlight importance return period choice on hazard degree hydraulics characteristics. We use UFSC campus basin as a test bed combine hydrological hydrodynamic model to define intensity degree. Six maps were elaborated using different periods (2, 10, 25, 50, 100 500-years) that characterize low high recurrence scenarios. map can be ideal verify effects buildings, while helps identify people security. All variables related rainfall effect its consequences (e.g. intensity, mean velocity, total area) follow logarithmic relationship, with small variation for higher periods. how influence should therefore considered in mapping.
